Getting Started ------------------------------------------------------------- This product enables access to your optical drive from Windows. You can now use your CDR(W) or DVD recorder for file storage and retrieval as if it were a hard drive or floppy disk. Discs must be formatted for DLA use. Refer to the on-line help for configuration and formatting instructions. DLA may not function properly if Auto Insert Notification (AutoRun) is disabled. If you encounter difficulties with DLA, please ensure that the AutoRun feature of your operating system is enabled. 2. System Requirements ------------------------------------------------------------- The system requirements for this product include: IBM or 100%-compatible Pentium 133 or higher, at least 32 Megabytes of RAM, and 10 Megabytes of free disk space 3. Multiple Device Support ------------------------------------------------------------- If you have more than one supported optical device attached to your system, DLA will only be able to access one device at a time. If a check mark already appears next to the Use with DLA menu item, DLA is already enabled for that device. 4. Upgrading DLA ------------------------------------------------------------- While upgrading DLA to a Windows NT or Windows 2000 machine, a message might display stating that a driver has not been installed. This does not affect the actual installation. Continue with the installation as normal and then reboot at the end of the installation process. The correct driver will be installed. 5. Sharing a DLA Drive ------------------------------------------------------------- If you share a DLA drive, you may encounter data transfer issues. Sharing of DLA drives is not supported with this release, and not recommended for reliable data transfer. 6. Incompatibility with Drag-to-Disc (DirectCD) ------------------------------------------------------------- DLA and Roxio's Drag-to-Disc perform similar functions and are incompatible. Some computers equipped with the Windows XP operating system will have Drag-to-Disc preinstalled at the factory. Please uninstall Drag-to-Disc then continue installing DLA. (Drag-to-Disc was formerly called DirectCD.) 7. Incompatibility with Microsoft Backup ------------------------------------------------------------- If you experience a conflict with Microsoft Backup and DLA, please eject all DLA discs and disable DLA on the drive you wish to use as a backup device. To disable DLA in Windows XP: 1. Right-click the drive name in My Computer. 2. Select Properties from the shortcut menu. 3. Click the DLA tab on the Properties dialog box. 4. Click the "Enable DLA on your drives" checkbox until the checkmark disappears. 5. Click OK. After completing your backup, enable DLA by restoring the checkmark in the "Enable DLA on your drives" checkbox. To disable DLA in Windows 98, ME and 2000 when you have more than one recorder drive: 1. Right-click the drive name in My Computer of the drive you will NOT be using with MS Backup. A checkmark will appear next to the "Use with DLA" menu item if DLA is enabled for this drive. 2. Select "Use with DLA" from the shortcut menu to enable DLA on the drive that will not be used with MS Backup. This will disable DLA on the other drive. After completing your backup, enable DLA by following the steps above to restore the checkmark next to the "Use with DLA" menu item. To disable DLA in Windows 98, ME and 2000 when you have only one recorder drive: 1. Select "Run" from the Windows Start menu. 2. Type "cmd" without the quote marks into the Run dialog box if you are using Windows 2000. Type "command" without the quote marks into the Run dialog box if you are using Windows 98 or ME. 3. Click OK. 4. A DOS command line window appears. 5. To disable DLA, type "Dla.exe disable X:" without the quote marks. Replace "X" with the drive letter of your recorder drive. 6. Press Enter on your keyboard. After completing your backup, enable DLA by reopening the command line window and typing: "Dla.exe enable X:" without the quote marks. Replace "X" with the drive letter of your recorder drive. Then press Enter on your keyboard. 8. Problems with High Speed CD-RW Media ------------------------------------------------------------- If you experience problems using high speed media with a low speed drive, please check with the manufacturer of your drive to determine what type of media is supported. 9. Problems Reading CD-R Media ------------------------------------------------------------- For a non Multi-Read CD-ROM drive to read a CD-R disc, the media must be made "compatible." This media must not be compressed. 10. Multiple Drive Incompatibilities ------------------------------------------------------------- If you have multiple IDE devices connected to the same IDE channel, you may experience problems using DLA simultaneously with other mastering software. To remedy this connect your IDE devices to different IDE channels (see your computer's User Guide for more information). 11. Two Identical or Nearly Identical Drives ------------------------------------------------------------- If you have two identical optical drives installed on your computer, DLA will only recognize one. This issue can also occur when different versions (IDE, USB, SCSI, etc.) of the same drive are installed. 12. Conflict with Nero software ------------------------------------------------------------- If Nero disc mastering software is installed on your computer, DLA will not recognize blank discs. The work-around for this conflict is to temporarily uninstall Nero's software. Nero products do not affect DLA's ability to read discs containing data. 13. Application Accelerator Conflict ------------------------------------------------------------- Intel's Application Accelerator version 2.3 is incompatible with DLA on computers using Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. If this driver is installed on a computer with DLA, the computer will crash when it is restarted. This problem can be resolved by restarting your computer in safe mode and switching to the Microsoft driver provided with your computer’s operating system. Consult your operating system Help file for more information. 14. Incompatibility with Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 ------------------------------------------------------------- DLA and Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 perform similar functions and are incompatible. Please uninstall Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 then continue installing DLA. 15. Formatting Uses Disc Space ------------------------------------------------------------- Formatting a disc with DLA reduces the amount of space available on the disc. Formatting a write-once DVD, for instance, uses about 300 MB of space.
